All ads are required to have the following information: Price (even for trades), brand, model, and location (City and State, for instruments, not accessories). It is acceptable to link to an external ad if you are promoting a sale of your personal equipment. No Ebay auctions, but "Buy It Now" listings are fine. Photos are HIGHLY suggested as well, and may be hosted on Google Drive, or elsewhere. If you see an ad that does not meet these criteria, please report it.

This isn't mine. Nor do I know whose it is. But I like typing tuba into CL and see if I can find any beaters between the counters and I found this puppy as the first result. Pretty hefty CL find around here as any tubas are scarce except at music stores.

If anyone has $11,500 to drop, it seems like a really nice horn.

Quite a hefty sum indeed. But it seems around about where I've seen other Thor's in good shape.

Well, would you accept a check in that amount from a craigslist buyer?
Neither would I.
But I also wouldn't offer for sale or expect to find a buyer for such an expensive tuba on CL.

58mark wrote:I think what bort was talking about was showing up to any potential "first time" meeting with that kind of money in your pocket. When I've bought cars off of CL, I check out the car first, and if everything is legit, then gone and retrieved the cash, or at least not kept it on my body at the first meeting
I know...I was just joking about the thought of accepting anything other than cash from a CL buyer.
I've never bought a car from CL, but I went with a good friend to buy one a couple years ago. I waited in their car, in the driver's seat and in view of the seller/friend/car for sale, with the money while my friend checked out the car. When my friend was satisfied, they called me and told me the final negotiated price and I brought the cash out. Kind of a "buddy system," if you will. Worked out well and made my friend feel more comfortable about the situation.
I would not do a CL transaction alone, especially with the kind of cash it takes to buy a car or a tuba. The suggestions about conducting business in a public place are good and police stations are the best.

When I sold my truck, we went to his local bank together. He gave me the cash, I signed over the title then and there. That would also work if he got a cashier's check right on the spot, at the bank, with you able to see the transaction. You know it's good and there is not the load of cash to deal with.

Have you used Search Tempest? Try it for nationwide searches, you can search an entire state.

For what it's worth, I sold an expensive tuba on Craigslist and requested either cash or a cashier's check. Buyer came down to meet me in a public parking lot where he tried out the horn for the first time, then handed over the cashier's check. So yes there are people who would buy an expensive horn like a Thor off a CL ad.

Cashiers checks are not what they use to be. They are commonly counterfeit. Banks will hold the funds now until the check clears . Over the past 5 years I have accumulated over $7,000 in bad Cashiers / Certified checks for instruments I was trying to sell. Always hold the sale of an Instrument until the check clears. I check with the institution from where the check is drawn upon. I will also check social media as a Background search just to ID if the person I am dealing with actually exists. I will also check Google street view of an address I have been given. There are a lot of Scammers out there who try to purchase/steal Musical instruments with Fraudulent Checks. Be Careful
