Retail Roundup: NYC-based gourmet cookie chain opens two South Florida locations (2024)

Who likes cookies?

Thought so. Then you are the kind of customer that Chip City Cookies, a gourmet cookie chain based in New York City, would like to see at two new locations set to open in May in South Florida.

One opened on May 17 at 302 E. Atlantic Ave., just east of Southeast Third Avenue, in Delray Beach. The other is scheduled to open on May 31 at 7285 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami.

They join the first South Florida location at 1935 West Ave. in Miami Beach.

According to a news release about the openings, Chip City Cookies began in 2017 as a competition between two friends in Astoria, Queens — Peter Phillips and Teddy Gallas — to find out who could create the best cookie.

What started out as a small storefront and a dream quickly expanded to more than 35 locations in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Maryland, Virginia, Massachusetts and Illinois.

Reviewers of the Miami Beach location, posted on Google, give it 4.8 stars.

One reviewer noted that employees will bake fresh cookies on demand if you ask. Another said the store’s cookies are kept warm, which was “very comforting” when paired with quality vanilla ice cream that’s also available.

“Where have you guys been my entire life?” another asked before explaining that she is now addicted to the “best chocolate chip cookies in South Beach or in South Florida!” She added, “Hot, soft, fresh and gigantic!”

The store rotates weekly from a collection of 65 classic flavors, which can be found on its website, chipcitycookies.com. Flavors include the classic chocolate chip, blueberry cheesecake, cookies n’ cream, dark chocolate peanut butter, s’mores, peanut better and jelly, triple chocolate, white chocolate macadamia, oatmeal apple pie and one that reviewers mention frequently, a brown sugar cookie filled with Biscoff cookie butter and topped with powdered sugar.

The company also announced a Series B investment of $7.5 million from Enlightened Hospitality Investments, managed by Shake Shack founder Danny Meyer, bringing the total amount raised from the company to $17.5 million.

In March 2023, the company announced plans to expand to two other locations in Pompano Beach and Fort Lauderdale. A spokeswoman for the company said there are plans to open stores later this year in Fort Lauderdale and Aventura, and that she would check on what happened to plans for a Pompano Beach location.
