A step-by-step guide to earning flying in the new Zereth Mortis Zone

Patch 9.2 is out, and players are flooding through the sigil-bound gates of beautiful Zereth Mortis, eager to take to the skies. Luckily, the process of unlocking flying is pretty straightforward and much easier than past requirements. In this guide, I’ll go over each requirement in detail, but here is an overview of what you’ll need to unlock Zereth Mortis flying…

You can unlock Zereth Mortis flying by completing the Unlocking the Secrets achievement which has six parts:

  1. Explore Zereth Mortis
  2. Find 5 Hidden Treasures in Zereth Mortis (Curious Collections)
  3. Complete 3 side storylines (Path to Enlightenment)
  4. Find and read 7 scrolls scattered throughout Zereth Mortis (Tales of the Exile)
  5. Kill 10 rare mobs in Zereth Mortis (Adventures in Zereth Mortis)
  6. Complete the 6th chapter of the Zereth Mortis campaign (A Means to an End)

In the rest of the guide, I’ll walk you through each requirement and answer some frequently asked questions about flying in Zereth Mortis.

1. Explore Zereth Mortis

As with nearly every other flying unlock, you’ll be required to reveal the entire map of Zereth Mortis. Simply travel around defeating rares and collecting treasures until the achievement pops up and you are good to go.

If you are curious, here is a list of all the areas you’ll need to explore:

  • Path of Inception
  • The Great Veldt
  • Terrace of Formation
  • Deserted Overlook
  • The Dread Portal
  • Genesis Fields
  • Pilgrim’s Grace
  • Arrangement Index
  • Resonant Peaks
  • Haven
  • Faith’s Repose
  • Catalyst Gardens
  • Dimensional Falls
  • Provis Fauna
  • Zovaal’s Grasp
  • Plain of Actualization
  • Lexical Glade

2. Find 5 Zereth Mortis treasures

While you’re exploring the zone, you’ll also want to collect 5 named treasures to earn the Curious Collections achievement. There are 27 possible treasures to choose from, but some of them will be difficult to get to without flying or abilities like Door of Shadows.

The best way to find these treasures is to download the HandyNotes and HandyNotes: Shadowlands addons. These addons will put additional markers on your map and add helpful information to the tooltip when you scroll over them.

As an example, here is the Library Vault treasure in Zereth Mortis. When you hover over it, HandyNotes shows you the buff you will need to obtain from a nearby shelf to unlock the chest.

Any of the large silver chests on the map should count toward the achievement, so all you need to do is download HandyNotes and get collecting!

If you find yourself still struggling with getting a specific treasure, check out the comments on this WowHead article because someone put together a helpful table of information for each treasure.

3. Complete 3 side storylines

In addition to the main campaign quests, you’ll also want to knock out 3 short storylines if you want to earn flying. Luckily, each quest chain contains 5-7 separate quests that take less than 15 minutes to knock out if you’re focused on them.

The three chains you’ll want to complete include:

  • Small Pet Problems – starts with Look Who I Found in Haven (/way 34.6 66.2)
  • Not Al Are Lost – starts with Enlightened Exodus in Haven (/way 33.8 64.6)
  • The Waters of Grace – starts with Lost Grace in Pilgrim’s Grace (/way 61.8 53.6)

Several players have reported problems with picking up the first quest in The Waters of Grace. If it hasn’t shown up for you, make sure you have completed the first chapter of the Zereth Mortis campaign (Into the Unknown), as it is required to start Lost Grace.

If you are still struggling to find where the quests start or lose track of one in the middle of the chain, I recommend that you check out the BtWQuests addon. It is a great addon that adds a dungeon-journal style interface for every major quest chain in the game.

The best part about it is the tree-based structure that shows the order of quests and the requirements to pick it up. You can also click on any quest to create a TomTom waypoint to the giver of the quest!

4. Find and read 7 scrolls in Zereth Mortis

The first person (if brokers are people) you meet upon arriving in Zereth Mortis is an exile named Firim. As an exile, Firim has been shunned by the Enlightened faction and recorded his thoughts on a series of scrolls scattered throughout Zereth Mortis.

If you want to earn flying, you need to find all 7 of them and “read” them. Once you are done reading each scroll, you’ll get the Tales of the Exile achievement, and you can vendor the scrolls for 10G a piece.

Most scrolls are relatively easy to find once you are in the area, but you need to know where to look. To help you out, I’ve put together the fanciest map you’ve ever seen with the location and coordinates for each part. I’ve also included the TomTom commands for all the coordinates to make things easier.

/way 39.03 31.09 Part 5

/way 67.42 25.18 Part 6

/way 64.83 33.64 Part 7

Suppose you don’t want to toggle between my amazing map and your game (I’ll be disappointed, but I’ll get over it). In that case, you can also see the locations of every scroll in the HandyNotes and HandyNotes: Shadowlands addons.

5. Kill 10 rares in Zereth Mortis

This is another easy requirement; all you need is to roam and watch the chat and the world map for rare spawns. You can also download HandyNotes and HandyNotes: Shadowlands to see the location of every rare in Zereth Mortis on your map.

6. Finish the 6th chapter of the Zereth Mortis Campaign

The last requirement for flying is the 6th part of the Zereth Mortis campaign. You can see where you are in the campaign at the top of your quest log under “Secrets of the First Ones.”

From there, all you need to do is pick up (and finish) the quests with the shield around them until you’ve unlocked flying!
